Definition: MOQ — minimum order quantity — is the smallest number of pieces a factory will produce per style, per fabric or per wash. In denim, MOQs exist because every stage has a setup cost that must be spread across the run.
Why denim MOQs exist at all
A jean is not printed; it is engineered. A single style requires a graded pattern set, a fabric lay long enough to cut efficiently, a sewing line configured for its construction, and a laundry load large enough to run a stable recipe. Below a certain quantity, those setups cost more than the garments. That threshold is the MOQ.
The three MOQs nobody explains
- Style MOQ — the minimum for one design. Driven by cutting and line setup.
- Fabric MOQ — the minimum a mill will dye or ship of one fabric. Often the real constraint: stock fabrics start low, custom fabrics start high.
- Wash MOQ — a laundry drum has a minimum stable load; very small wash lots behave unpredictably.
What "low MOQ" honestly means
When a factory says low MOQ, ask: per style, per colour, or per order? At ASF Jeans, single-style commissions from a few hundred pieces are common, using stocked fabrics and our library of repeatable washes. Going lower is sometimes possible — with trade-offs we will state plainly rather than hide in the price.
Five ways to launch under tight minimums
- Build the collection on one or two fabrics across several fits — you meet fabric MOQ once, not five times.
- Choose washes from the factory's existing recipe library instead of developing custom shades on order one.
- Consolidate colours: three styles in one wash beats one style in three washes.
- Use stock hardware (we fit original YKK as standard) and invest your budget in labels and patches, which personalise at any quantity.
- Plan the re-order in advance: factories price first orders better when a program is visible behind them.
The question to ask before "what's your MOQ?"
