Summary: a wash is not a colour — it is a controlled attack on indigo. Stones abrade, enzymes digest, acid mottles, ozone fades, tints stain. Every commercial cast you have ever admired is a recipe of these forces, run in a specific order for a specific time.
Rinse / raw
The gentlest treatment: a short wash to remove starch and control shrinkage. The indigo stays dense and dark; the garment ages on the wearer's body. This is the connoisseur's cast — and the cheapest to produce, because laundry time is short.
Stone wash
Pumice stones tumble with the garments, abrading the surface so the white core of ring-dyed yarn shows through. Longer tumble, lighter jean. The high points — seams, pockets, waistband edges — wear first, exactly as natural ageing would.
Enzyme wash
Cellulase enzymes eat microscopic surface fibres, fading the fabric like stones but with less damage and a softer hand. Most modern "stone washes" are actually enzyme or stone-enzyme hybrids — kinder to fabric, machines and water.
Acid / vintage (snow) wash
Stones soaked in bleaching agent touch the fabric unevenly, creating the high-contrast marble of the 80s — revived hard in current collections. Difficult to control, glorious when a laundry knows its drums; every batch is chemistry plus choreography.
Washed black & tints
Black denim washed until it whispers grey; brown, khaki or "dirty" tints layered over blue to create weathered casts. Tints are the current decade's signature — our lookbook's Drifter family is built on them.
Custom shades on PFD
PFD — prepared for dye — fabric is engineered to accept colour after the garment is sewn. This is how a brand gets a rose, sage or butter jean that matches its pantone: garment-dyed in-house, to order. One of our clients' favourite programs, because colour becomes a brand asset no one can copy off a shelf.
The only question that matters: is it repeatable?
Any laundry can produce a beautiful accident. Production is the art of producing it again — four thousand times. Every wash we approve with a client is recorded as a written recipe (load, stones, enzyme, time, temperature, chemistry) so bulk matches the sample, batch after batch.
